Ocean Cruise Family, Minor, Infant & Age Policies 2026

Cruise Infant Policy & Minimum Age

Most major ocean cruise lines require infants to be at least 6 months old at the time of sailing. Some longer voyages (transatlantic, Hawaii, Alaska) require 12 months. Children under the minimum age are not permitted.

Cruise Child, Teen & Family Policies

Kids Sail Free / Reduced Rates
Many lines offer promotions where children 17 and under sail free or at greatly reduced rates when sharing a cabin with 2 full-fare adults.
Kids Club & Youth Programs
Free supervised programs for ages 3–17. Activities are divided by age groups (3-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-14, 15-17).

Cruise Unaccompanied Minor Policy

Available on most ocean ships for children ages 8–17. An additional fee applies and a guardian must sign a waiver. The child receives dedicated supervision and a special ID.

Single Parent, Grandparent & Guardian Policies

Single parents and grandparents traveling with minors are welcome. Some lines require a notarized consent form from the absent parent for international sailings.

Age Policies on Ocean Cruises

  • Minimum Age to Sail: Usually 6 months
  • Drinking Age: 21 years old (U.S. flagged or in U.S. waters)
  • Casino Age: 18 or 21 depending on the ship and itinerary
  • Spa & Fitness: 18+ for most treatments (some 16+ with parent)
